CONVENTIONS
The Fall Conference will be October 31st - November 2nd, at Gatlinburg, TN. The Knoxville Ski Club is working with Michelle to organize the weekend. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. The conference is a great opportunity to learn more about the workings of the council and to gain and share knowledge about operating your clubs. With escalating air fares, the Trips Meeting will be a critical function. Make sure your club is represented by either your Trips officer or another officer who can make decisions for your club.
Don't forget that Crescent plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary at the 2009 Spring Convention. I've had a few responses from members who think they can provide some historical information, and I appreciate those efforts. By next month, I hope to send a list of specific questions / bits of information we need. As always, volunteers are needed. If you have questions, find information or items, or want to volunteer, please contact me.
TRIPS
Registrations are underway for all three Crescent ski trips. The 25th anniversary of Crescent's Race and Ski Camp is at Steamboat from December 6 - 13, 2008. Maximum participation is 400 members due to lodging and event facility capacities. Approximately 200 members are registered already. Other Crescent trips are Big Sky, Montana (January 17-24, 2009) and Keystone, CO (March 14 -21, 2009). Information for all three trips has been provided to all club trip directors and is posted on Crescent's web site. If your trip leaders have questions about the 2009 trips, have them contact Lisa Beregi, DRLAB88@aol.com. Questions about Steamboat can be addressed to Lisa or John Casey, caseyjohn@earthlink.net.
RACING
Racing is still trying to finalize next season's schedule. Sugar Mountain has a conflict with CSC Racing's originally scheduled date. Ron Scott, Racing Chair, is talking to Beech Mountain in an effort to switch the race dates at Sugar and Beech. The January 10th and 11th race will be held at Sugar Mountain with gate training at Appalachian Mountain on Friday, January 9th. Gate training times will be announced in the fall.
The training format for racers is changing this year at Steamboat. Monday and Tuesday will be GS training, Wednesday and Thursday will be SL training, and Friday will be whichever each group decides to do. On the second day (after lunch) of both GS and SL training, a Crescent Racing formatted race will be conducted. Anyone wishing to participate in these races must have a current Crescent handicap or a qualifying and verifiable 2006-2008 NASTAR handicap. These race times and handicap calculations will not count for the race season. Camp participants participating in the Tuesday and Thursday races can pay the NASTAR race fee on Friday and also run the Friday race course. John Casey or Rich Mead will be sending out more detailed information later this summer. Another change this year is improved snowmaking. Steamboat Ski Resort is currently laying water pipe for snowmaking on See Me and the area serviced by the new Christy lift.
ADMINISTRATIVE
The new Crescent logo, in its many formats, has been issued to all clubs. I haven't heard of any problems using it so I have to assume that you were able to use at least one of the formats. Please be sure to discontinue use of the old logo. Some newsletters that I received recently still contained the old one, and many clubs' web sites have not been updated with the new logo.
Article XII of Crescent's bylaws requires clubs to "provide a list of names of Members covered by the payment of dues at the time of payment of dues for purposes of verification of payment". Crescent's treasurer, Rod Davis, is interested in replacing those lists with a certification, signed by a club's treasurer, that the membership count is accurate at time of payment. Obviously, that would require a bylaws change. Please provide Rod and me with your comments regarding the need for such a change.
That's all for now. Enjoy the summer but start thinking about lots of snow this winter and get trip registrations in before air fares are even higher!
